BYO PIECE FURNITURE PAINTING WORKSHOP

BYO PIECE FURNITURE PAINTING WORKSHOP

About this workshop:

Have you always wanted to learn to update your furniture but aren’t sure where to start? Then this workshop is perfect for you. Do you want to refresh that bedside cabinet, chair or mirror that you’ve had for ages or perhaps update a family heirloom and fall in love with it again?

What will I learn?

This workshop is all about learning how to work with chalk paint. You will learn to hand paint to a nice smooth finish with no drips or obvious brush strokes, and how to use waxes and other topcoats to seal, protect and nourish your piece.

What should I bring?

Bring along a small piece (or two) of furniture such as a bedside table, chair, mirror, side table or stool. You are welcome to bring along a few drawers, doors or mirror from a larger piece to start off and finish the rest of that project at home. It needs to be an indoor piece of furniture as chalk paint isn’t suitable for wet areas or outdoors.

Pre-Workshop Preparation

If your piece has any hardware that can be removed such as drawer handles please remove these and bring them with you in a ziploc bag. Please ensure your piece is sturdy and give it a good clean with sugar soap (if it’s greasy) or warm water prior to the workshop. If you have deep scratches, dints or gouges it’s a good idea to fill these beforehand. I use Timber Mate wood filler which you can get in Bunnings (I use the water-based one, so it doesn’t make greasy stains under the paint!).
For those wanting a raw finish (i.e. the bedside tabletop sanded back to raw timber), this process is time consuming and I advise that the sanding be completed prior to the workshop day. If you are unsure, please don’t hesitate to call me on 0421 962831 and we can talk it through. If you are planning to paint your piece all over you don’t need to sand it in advance, as we will do this in class.

What is provided in the workshop?

Your choice of chalk paint, waxes and finishes and all other materials and tools required to complete your project. I provide morning and afternoon tea (please let me know of any food allergies), hot and cold beverages. ** Please bring your own lunch to eat in the studio, or outside if the weather is nice! **

What should I wear?

Aprons are provided but it’s best if you wear old clothes in case of paint splatter. Please wear closed toe shoes.

Where is Sarah Macaulay Studio located?

The Studio is at 18 Judith Street, Seaforth (this is in the north part of Seaforth just off Wakehurst Parkway). Please park on the street outside number 18 and come up the drive, along the right- hand side of the house and through the gate. You will see the backyard studio and I will look forward to welcoming you!

If you are running late for the workshop I would be grateful if you could please give me a call on 0421 962831. Thank you.
